The waves in Weligama are relatively mild and consistent for beginner surfers or those brushing up on their skills before heading to more advanced spots around the island. It’s our favorite thing to do early in the morning and definitely works up an appetite!
We typically base ourselves at W15, which is right on the beach and flanked on either side with low-key surf schools where you can sign up for an hour-long session with a local instructor for about 2,000 Rupees. Trust us, it feels like much longer when you’re a beginner.
